The weather in Chilliwack has given us a taste of Spring recently, and the promise of renewal and colour after what has been a very gray Winter. Throughout all the seasons we are called to provide flowers for funerals and celebration of life services.

A Loving Tribute
No one likes to dwell on death, but it is very much part of life. Flowers have traditionally played an important part of the ceremonies and duties associated with the passing of a loved one. We have years of experience of helping families and friends create beautiful and fitting displays at what is a very difficult time.

The contrast of red carnations and white daisies along with white daisies and white wax flower filler are a lovely tribute to the memory of someone special. Week 2 Count Down To Christmas - 2 Candle Center Pieces

More Center Piece Suggestions
Last time we looked at some simple center piece designs. If you have more room on your festive table, then a two candle design can work really well. These are some examples for Center Pieces done by UFV students as part of the 'Floral Design - Christmas Arrangements' course we teach at the Chilliwack campus.

These pieces feature White Casa Blanca lilies, Carnations and assorted Daisy Mums with Hypericum berries as an accent. An excellent addition to any dining room table for the special people in your life, and a great talking point between courses!

Food is usually the the biggest focus on the big day, but setting the scene with a center piece really adds another dimension to your feast. There is a vast choice of designs, but choosing a simple nosegay centre piece to adorn your table for Christmas dinner is popular because it offers colour and style without trying to compete with the delicious dishes you have prepared.

Christmas is always a nice time to use candles, not only for the warm glow they cast, but to accentuate the carnations and variations of greenery in your designs, such as cedar, scotch pine, fir, and holly. We are so fortunate to have such an abundance of evergreens in our own back yard in the Pacific Northwest at this time of year.

Week 4 Countdown to Christmas " Candy Cane Lane"

Baskets of Style
Creating within a basket is a special kind of opportunity. The basket above was designed by our very gifted students at UFV, and it is called" Candy Cane Lane". Although we associate candy cane with deliciously sweet indulgence, it is also symbolically packed with meaning. The candy cane itself is the rock of ages, it is a J for the shepherd's staff, white represents purity. The flavor of the candy cane itself is peppermint very similar to hyssop which was used for purification and sacrifice.

Creating within a basket is a special kind of opportunity. Spacing and choice of colours is particularly important, and you will want to ensure that your basket complements the contents (and vice versa). Above you can see the wide variety of baskets designed and created by our very talented students as part of our "Floral Design – Christmas Arrangements" course.

Getting ready for the Holidays!

Evergreen wreaths are a fantastic way to start your preparations. Giving one a central position outdoors or indoors really brings the excitement of the season home.

These beautiful outdoor wreaths have been designed and created by students who are currently attending our "Floral Design - Christmas Arrangements" class at the University of the Fraser Valley. They have used a variety of evergreens and ornaments to create seasonal wreaths that have you dreaming of warm hot chocolate and sleigh bells.

Our wreaths were made up of natural Fir, Pine, Cedar, Laurel and Holly. For exterior use, these wreaths will look good outside until the end of January, so they really last. The wreath symbolizes unwavering faith and immortality - what a way to welcome to any guest to your home at Christmas!

Remembrance Day 2011 in Chilliwack plus November Blooms

Each year we remember the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country on Remembrance Day. The Royal Canadian Legion helps veterans and their families, and much more:

Orange roses have emerged as one of the true stand-outs among today's popular rose varieties. The fiery color of an orange rose immediately conjures up passionate thoughts of romance. They can also be reminiscent of the warmth of a glowing sunset, or the sweetness of citrus. Orange roses come in a range of shades, from bright orange to softer coral and peach colors. Since the introduction of the orange rose into the world of roses, they have quickly found their place in the hearts and imaginations of rose aficionados everywhere.

Near the turn of the 20th century, rose cultivators began to produce orange roses, thanks to the recent discovery of wild yellow roses, and the spread of advanced hybridization techniques. As these early experiments to produce orange roses yielded positive results, rose enthusiasts found themselves with a new layer to add to the increasingly rich tapestry of rose meanings.

The orange rose has mainly come to be regarded as the symbol for desire, enthusiasm and passion. Being a literal mixture of the colors yellow and red, orange roses were often seen as a bridge between the feelings of friendship symbolized by yellow roses, and love associated with red roses. Giving a bouquet of orange roses could be a sign of emerging romantic feelings and the desire to move a relationship beyond the stage of friendship. As the days lengthen and the weather improves (it didn't rain every day last week!) thoughts turn towards the outdoors and the bursts of color already brightening up our yards. There are plenty of March activities here in Chilliwack for local indoor and outdoor fun.

Last week our store was broken into and we lost our computers and POS machine. The store opened as usual and we have carried on as normal. We have had so many offers of help it has really been heart-warming. We have a great community here in Chilliwack, thank you all for your help.

Fighting Back After A Break-in: Business As Usual

They took our computers, but not our spirit!

It was a shock to find out that our shop in the Southgate Mall, Chilliwack was broken into late on Sunday 30th January. The RMCP response was quick and helpful and the forensic team were very thorough. Thieves took our computers and the POS machine and made a bit of mess in the process. But all our wonderful stock of flowers is intact and we our open for business as usual. All our confidential data, including credit card information, is encrypted. The thieves will not be able to use anything on the computers and your information is secure.

Years of experience

Mary Clark Flowers has been in business in Chilliwack for over 60 years, and we have had the shop for the last 9 years. Thanks to our wonderful customers and great staff we have managed well during the downturn and prospects are great. Losing the equipment is a setback, for sure, but it won’t stop us delivering the excellent service you rely on.

Don't be tongue-tied when you come into our Southgate Mall store. Our friendly staff are trained to help you select the flowers that are right for you and will always guide you if you need help. Here are some simple question to help you:

1. Why you are giving the flowers?
It could be an occasion, like Valentine's Day or a birthday, or it could be as a Thank You or Thinking of You. Knowing why you are looking for the perfect display helps us to make sure you get what you want.

2. What type of person is receiving the bouquet?
When we ask if the person is a bolder or softer person it helps us guide you to the flowers that will appeal to their personality type.

3. Do they have a favorite color?
We can build the arrangement around a central color or colors to make it unique.

4. Where will the bouquet be displayed?
Some people love scents, some do not. Heavily-scented flowers in a small venue can be overpowering.

5. What type of container would you like?
We have a wide range of vases, pots and other containers that will display your selection to perfection.

6. What message and card would you like?
We can help you write your message and choose the perfect card. We have a large range of designs and your message can be printed directly from our computer system, too.

7. Would you like the flowers to be delivered or will you take them and wow yourself?
We have a full delivery service or you can take them direct from the store.It's that easy!

We are open on Sunday 13th February from 9:00 - 5:30 PM, and also all day on Valentine's Day. But you can pop in and order your flowers now. We will make your bouquet fresh and deliver on it Monday 14th February and you can rest assured your special person will receive a wonderful token of your love.

Just over a week to go!

This week we will be talking about hand tied bouquets - the ultimate in luxury and class for your Christmas floral designs. Chilliwack might have been experiencing record rainfall, but a unique hand tied bouquet will fill you with seasonal cheer.

Over the last four weeks we have covered the following seasonal topics: permanent botanicals and poinsettias, Christmas wreaths and centrepieces. Now is the time to make or order your Christmas bouquet so that your home will be filled with the scents and sights of the finest seasonal flowers.

Creating the perfect bouquet
It seems obvious, but you have to start with the best flower stock if you want to create the best bouquet. Blooms that only last a couple of days will spoil your arrangement and your hard work will be wasted. We have some wonderful stock in at the moment - see our flowers of the week, below, for more details.
Once you have decided which flowers to use, here are some hints on how to create a masterpiece:

Think of your bouquet as a hemisphere of color and texture with a striking bloom at the centre and complimentary flowers and foliage surrounding it on all sides. This helps you to balance the bouquet.
Seasonal colors include red, white, yellow and green.
Greenery can be traditional pine and conifer or you can use beargrass, fern or other long lasting foliage.
Ties are traditionally ribbons of various colors, sizes and width. If you are using narrow ribbon ensure the tie is secure. If your bouquet is larger then wider ribbon will keep everything in place.

This week: Centrepieces!
With the grey, wet weather we are enjoying(!) here in Chilliwack at the moment, now is the perfect time to start creating your Christmas Floral centrepieces that will last throughout the season. In this Christmas Countdown we have already covered silks and permanent botanicals and wreaths, and next week we will take a look at hand-tied bouquets.

What makes the perfect centrepiece?
There is no definite answer to this because it will depend on several factors such as the size of your table and the decor in your room. When your centrepiece will be the focus of meals, parties and gathering you want it to shine. Look for colors and textures that will compliment each other and the surrounding room. If you start with fresh-cut evergreen like pine as the base, you can then add in layers. Use ribbon, cones and berries was other long-lasting accents and make fresh flowers the heart of your display.

Keeping the oasis (or other base) moist is the key to keeping your display fresh. And don't forget - if your fresh flowers start to look tired, you can always substitute them with new ones to keep everything looking in tiptop shape. White Casa Blanc Lily - this is one of our most fragrant flowers it is pure white with 3 to 5 blooms on each stem, being one of the principle Christmas colors can make a magnificent bouquet when it is done up with red roses or other red accent flowers.
Freesia - another beautiful fragrant flower which comes in a variety of colors snd has a elegant cascading quality to it brings a whimsical element to any bouquet.

This Week - Christmas Wreaths!
The snow might have mostly gone from Chilliwack but Christmas decorations are appearing all over the city. Our store in Southgate Mall is decked out in its seasonal finery and you can now order all your Christmas flowers online from our website.

Last week in our series of Christmas Countdown posts we talked about Silks and Permanent Botanicals. This week we are going to talk about another seasonal favorite - wreaths. We have some beautiful wreaths in stock now and we can make them to order, too. If you are creating your own wreath, here are a few tips to ensure it stays fresh and festive all season long:

Choose your greenery wisely. We have a wide selection of evergreens here in BC but some, like hemlock, tend to drop needles quickly after being cut. The tip ends of the branches work best.
Your yard is an ideal place to find cones, berries and other items that will stand out against the greenery.
If the wreath is to be placed outdoors then soaking it completely in water (you can use your wheelbarrow for this) can help to keep it fresh. Indoor wreaths benefit from daily spritzing with water.
Outdoor wreaths need to be tightly secured, especially in windy weather.

Flowers of the week

Roses. One can never go very far wrong with roses, coming in many different colors although designs really seem to be calling out for red roses as christmas approaches.
Gerbera daisies are also a favourite - often called the flower of good cheer. The large single bloom flower will put a smile on anyone's face that receives a bouquet with them in it.

With the freezing temperatures here in Chilliwack and snow in the forecast it is all too easy to imagine that Christmas is fast approaching. With just over four weeks until the big event, now is the time to plan your home decor. To help you make the most the of season, and your time, we have created this Christmas Flowers Countdown series of blog posts.

Chilliwack will be getting into the swing of the season with Santa and a host of floats in the 'Parade of Light and Sounds' on December 4th.

Poinsettias are a familiar Christmas plant that last through the whole season and into the New Year, and can be the cornerstone of your seasonal displays. Remembrance Day in Chilliwack and flower ideas for November.

The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, Remembrance Day, is a time when we remember the sacrifices that have been made by the men and women of the armed forces. The Poppy Campaign by the Royal Canadian Legion is a reminder of the 117,000 Canadians who gave their lives. Funds raised by this campaign are put into trust funds for veterans and their families who need support.
